Must you get a cosmetology license to get a job as a make-up artist?

I am interested in learning make-up techniques, but don't care to learn about hair, nails, and all that other stuff that they teach you in Cosmetology school.Must you get a cosmetology license to get a job as a make-up artist?
Cosmetologists aren't taught makeup. It's a common misconception that you go to a beauty school to become a makeup artist. That just isn't true. Beauty schools are for people who want to do skincare, haircare, and nails NOT makeup. 9 times out of 10 they don't even employ a teacher for makeup you just read a chapter in a book on it. To learn makeup you want to go to a makeup school. The most highly rated are:

MUD (Burbank California and New York)

    Westmore academy (Burbank California)

Complexions (Canada ..imo one of the best out there)

Vancouver film school (canada if you want to specialize in film)

    Makeup forever schools (Paris)

Don't bother with the beauty schools for makeup artistry. You'll learn no makeup and won't get any jobs because you won't have the training needed.Must you get a cosmetology license to get a job as a make-up artist?
Review the laws in your state. Makeup artists in California do not need a license.
It's an amazing skill to have all of them..
I am speaking for the state of PA. it is necessary to

attend a 9-month program at a Beauty School.

Or 1250 hours of training, and that entitles you to do hands on clients. ( also licensed to do hair, within your state)

Now, nails are seperate, the schooling is a total of 300 hours about 3-months. ( But Make-up is included in a cosmetologist's licenses).

Each state varies, however if you check at any local Beauty School and most requirements are similar. The hours vary a little, thats all.

Our State requirements are sometimes difficult and not always

Should Hilary Clinton hire a designer and make-up artist to help her look more energetic?

I like Hilary Clinton she is a running presidential candidate for the Democratic Party but she looks tired to me. I would love to see her clothing selections change ( I would volunteer) and a make-up artist create an energetic look on Hilary. What do you think?

Please limit comments to the question not your political point of view. This is strictly about her appearance being updated.

Hi, I am a Make-up artist who needs help in how much to charge?

I was living in Los Angeles, and just had the opportunity to work professionally once before I was called home for family reasons. I had been hired by the Queen Mary for their Halloween Haunted House In Los Angeles, California. Now, in Texas, I have been approached to create and apply the make-up for a children's video. I have NO idea how much to ask for. Does anyone have any suggestions?Hi, I am a Make-up artist who needs help in how much to charge?
Eesh, tough call! I guess it depends on the complexity of the job, number of hours, number of children, travel expenses... so many different factors.

Have you thought about asking other makeup artist professionals in Texas on the Beauty School Lounge, perhaps?Hi, I am a Make-up artist who needs help in how much to charge?
hhmmmm.....i'm not good with charging either. but one time i was helping a makeup artist do makeup for the wedding. and i think she got like 200-300 dollars that night. and she put makeup on the bride, the mother, and 3 brides maids.

so i would think like charge each person 20-30 dollars. i dont know. goodluck =)

  • How to become a make-up artist ? Help, please. (:?

I think for my career I want to be a make-up artist. I really love make-up and I'm very good at it for my age. I'm still in high school and I have a few years left. So, I'm just wondering what I'll have to do in order to become a make-up artist. Like classes, kits, etc. I'm also interested in theater make-up. So, tell me about both and basically just tell me everything you know.

Thank you. (:How to become a make-up artist ? Help, please. (:?
you will need to enroll is cosmetology school.

google cosmetology schools to find one near your area.

kits are normally provided by the cosmetology school, but you have to pay for them... kinda like school books at a college.

best of luck :DHow to become a make-up artist ? Help, please. (:?
My suggestion is to start getting practice. While I dont plan on being a make-up artist, I am good at it and enjoy it. I use any excuse to do it, for example, I did make up for our homecoming show for our class. You can try to do make-up for your school's plays and any theater productions really. Also study it. Research everything you can. Read magazines. The usual.
ahh you sound just like this girl Kara i know -- same deal with her accept she's got one year left of highschool--

she does the make up for literally all the school plays and is AMAZING no lie and she's definately going places

Looks like a mini Scarlet Johanson

sorry but i dont know what shes going to do -- but maybe you can go to a department store or a MAC store and ask them about training and classes because MAC is amazing %26amp;%26amp; any classees with them would definately help

    Good LUCK =)
research cosmetic schools. some hair schools also teach makeup, but they dont always go into movie makeup. my cosmetology school only taught the basics of makeup, i wish i learned more.

How do i become a celbrity make-up artist??

applying make up to all the a-lister stars, movie sets and fashion shows in Hollywood? How do i become a celbrity make-up artist??
train at a beauty school with a good reputation, then work your way up through a variety of jobsHow do i become a celbrity make-up artist??
you will need to train with the biggest makeup artists which can cost anything upto 10 thousand pounds my mum went with ruby hammer for the first year it cost 8 grand. after that you will need to work as a basic makeup artist for a few years to build your portfolio up ideally working with hairdressers who get their pics put in top mags would be ideal as then your portfolio will be up there with the thousands of others wanting that same job. after that you basiclly put yourself out there find contacts who know people who work behind the scenes who could recommend you. but remember this is a very popular job and alot of people will be going for it that have alot more experiance than you most of the top makeup artists these days have at least 10 years experiance before they got to work on the stars and have alot of training to back them up, college courses will not be accepted.

my mum is a makeup artist for a hairdresser called dorothy hammond she is one of europes biggest hairdressers and my mums makeup has been in vogue and many hair mags but my mum still cant get higher than that because there is always someone better, so its not easy. i hope this hasnt put you of and if your really serious i wish you all the look and hope you achieve your dream. xxxx
go to some training place usually there are those types of erm places where u can train to be one

What is the most prestigious make up artist school?

I would love to learn how to be a make up artist....

I live in Los Angeles, California.

I was going to cosmetology school when I was a lot younger, but stopped due to the quality of the school. (teachers wouldn't show up, one was a major perv.)

Right now I'm attending jr. college so I can transfer to a 4 year. I'm studying graphic art and design, which I'm really good at, but I think that a lot of the other stuff-- like me failing math, and science-- is getting in the way.

So, Now that you have some background about me...

what are some of the best and most prestigious make up artist schools in Los Angeles or surrounding areas.

also-- what should I look for when choosing a school??What is the most prestigious make up artist school?
If you are considering special effects make up or anything for theater or film, your best bet would be either USC or UCLA's film schools. You would need to get into the PRODUCTION programs and then specialize in make up. USC.edu and UCLA.edu would have links to the film school's Web sites. Keep in mind that USC is still ranked the top film school in the nation and has a killer theater program as well in which you could apply your trade. Similarly, UCLA also has a great program that might be more affordable. Both schools are highly selective in terms of admission, but if your grades and educational history are good enough, you certainly could get in. Both offer great financial aid packages as well so don't let the cost--especially at USC--deter you from pursuing what you want to do.

What does it mean when you have to do a portfoilio if your a designer or make-up artist?

Yea i know it's kind of a stupid question. What does it mean when you have to do a portfoilio if your a designer or make-up artist?
a portfolio is a collection of pictures of your workWhat does it mean when you have to do a portfoilio if your a designer or make-up artist?
Find a best photographer possible, let him make pictures of your works. The one who alerady worked with order like this is preferable, but if you can't locate such, then go the ';try and error'; way.
    it's all about the photgraphs
that mean u have to have pictures of work that u did like if ur a designer show the sketches and end result of ur project
If you have to ask, then you don't need one.
You need to have a presentation binder or some type of ';visible book of samples'; that shows what you have done. It may be easier to take photos of different styles, or looks you have created and place in a presntation binder -- you can get them at Kinkos or any office supply store.

Also, in your port, you'll need extra copies of your resume and if possible, samples of your work you can leave with the people you interview.

I think, it's best to get a Web site or a blog, with photos and brief explainations of your work and how you created everything. That way when you send a resume via e-mail, you can refer the interviewer to the site before taking time out of both your and their busy time.

I'm in PR and I have a site online. It's old and needs serious updates, but it helped when I couldnt snail mail samples.

    Good luck!
You need to have a profile full of pictures of some of your best work. Think of including pictures of '; Before and After';. This is useful tool in gaining a prospective employee's or clients respect. A picture says it all, you know?

  • What would you suggest to your friend if she wants to become a make up artist for a funeral home ?

My friend just called me and told me this. She is going to a cosmetology school here in NYC. She thinks, it must be easier to work on ';dead people'; than living customers ! I just told her to do some research as of ';how emotional it could be'; for her.

She is by nature, an emotional person. What would you do ? What would you tell her/him ?What would you suggest to your friend if she wants to become a make up artist for a funeral home ?
I work with this one lady who does hairdressing on dead people. It doesn't seem to bother her at all, but I don't think I could do it.

I would just tell your friend to make sure she knows what she's getting herself into. There should be something besides dead people for a cosmetologist to work on.What would you suggest to your friend if she wants to become a make up artist for a funeral home ?
I'd tell her she'd do really good, cause people are already just dying to use her services.! I'd tell here to do a good job, cause there are probably others around that will let her down. Payment arrangements for her services might be hard to accomplish, unless she could arrange a lay-away plan with them. But, even then, she would need to be careful, because the clients might try to stiff her, especially if the client brings a chair with them for Rigor Mortis to set in. In that case, she would have to wait til Rigor left to keep from being stiffed.
let her continue to do the course, she may be able to get work experience and get hands on time before she makes her final decision.

you be surprised at what may come out of this for her,it just might be her thing..i know a lady that does body retreival from accidents, hospitals, homes etc and i squint my eyes thinking of her job,but she finds it rewarding and tragic, she had just finished tending to a 4 yr old girl that was in a head on car accident, she started this job 2 yrs ago,she is 38..

she said most the people are over 35,as some of the younger folk couldnt cope, its full on,emotions at times..but there is a little bit of strenght in all of us,and its surprising wot one CAN do she says.
Wow ! Well, if she is ';emotional and passionate', I would suggest her to re consider ! Clo, you have the most strangest friends ! LOL !!!
    ';Clothing optional';
    I would tell her ';Be the best you can be.';
she is confronting her greatest fear

    be a friend.
    Uh....um...I.....Uh.....well.....dude!?!

Are you sure you want to do that?
I think she should finish the school and get her certificate as a cosmetologist.. then she can still change her mind.. if she wants to work on living or dead people.. I am an emotional person.. very easily moved to tears.. but if you work in health care.. and you work in long term care especially, you have to wash and dress people who are very close to death..If they just can't do anything on their own... anymore and also need a lot of encouragement to just eat a little bit and to have a meal replacing drink.. to give them some energy when they can't eat at all.. those people need to be put on a mechanical lift..which has to be operated by two people. but one lady.. she is so skinny.. she only weighs like 85 lbs.. that I can easily move from the bed and lift into the wheelchair without help... I guess it may not be so scary after all to see some dead people and to do something for them after death.. some of them just look as if they were asleep... but take on a more waxen look as if they were not really there anymore as if this was just a shell.. which is why if loved ones see them they often see they look like the person they knew when alive.. but the soul is gone.. therefore they have a kind of empty look.. if your friend is a believer that the spirit lives on.. that we don't really die and that what she sees there is just a shell that the real part of this person has gone to a better place where there is no pain... crossing the rainbow bridge I call it, if she can think like that, then dead people will not scare her.. and it may make a big difference to the family who view the person who passed on .. if this p;erson has some make up on.. it makes it easier for those who loved this person to cope ... so she is doing a good job for a good reason..

People can emotionally do things they thought they weren't able to.. I know it from myself.. that I can talk to even young people who I know are going to die.. and be strong whilst in there.. if i have to go into the bathroom and have 5 minutes to myself afterwards that's another thing.. and I am emotional.. i cry over an emotional book even if it has a happy ending.. or something I watch on TV can move me to tears.. either in a happy way or a sad way.. so I think it has more to do with her religious beliefs.. if she believes in the everlasting life of the spirit.. then I think even an emotional person can do that.. she has to figure that out for herself.. in any case if she finishes this school, she will have a certificate or a diploma.. and can still decide if she wants to work on the living or the dead.. it's not a decision she should make over night..

It is emotionally a lot harder if you are a caregiver and a person you have known dies than to see a body.. and you never knew the person in life...

    xxx
I have never heard of ';cosmetology school'; I would have guessed it was where they sent Russian astronauts, or hippies to the cosmic school of life. lol

It sounds like a dead end job.

I meet a man a few days ago, he is going to set up a studio opposite the hospital set up to take new born baby photographs, he asked if I would like to work with him %26amp; it sounds like a great idea.

Anyway I was thinking about working with people every day, that are experiencing their most joyous day.

The idea was quite thrilling, I love people %26amp; extreme happiness, overjoy, I couldn't go home after work without being plagued with good thoughts. I thought about Weddings being similar.

Then my thoughts led on to people in jobs that were the opposite, funeral homes cane to mind %26amp; I could not imagine taking it on.

I could do it, but what would it do to me?

I imagine you would have to be involved in the background of each case individual %26amp; intimately in order to present the desist in the way their friends %26amp; family would find appropriate.

Maybe part of that job is to liaison with family, I don't know.

Put that with bogging up someone's sons head or rearranging body parts to look how they remember him, it must take a particular type of person. Or learn to be detached from feeling empathy or something in areas I don't want to lose touch with.

So there you go, that just happens to be my recent thoughts on the matter.

Whats a good cosmatology school? I want to become a make up artist?

And do you need a high school diploma to become a makeup artist?Whats a good cosmatology school? I want to become a make up artist?
If you want to work in a salon, you must go to cosmetology school. You need to get a high school diploma in case the makeup artist gig doesn't work out (I am a full-time freelance makeup artist, and I see so many people who just don't make it into the industry).

If you want to work on photo shoots, fashion shows and do freelancing makeup, you should actually assist a working artist and not spend money on school because to work in those fields, you don't need any sort of certificate.Whats a good cosmatology school? I want to become a make up artist?
My sister went to the Aveda Institute and really liked it.
I went to The Salon Professional Academy because it is the best there is. :)

What steps do I need to take to be a make up artist part time?

SO I HAVE THIS GREAT IDEA!

I am going to go to people's home and events to do their make up!

BUT I am not a professional just yet, but many people do stop me when I am around town to ask me about my make up so I must be doing a good job.

What steps do I need to take to make this my new part time job? What steps do I need to take to be a make up artist part time?
That's a GREAT idea! Problem is, it's easier said than done. When I first became interested in Makeup I perfected my own...that was easy! As I started doing it for other people it became much more difficult. Here's how I learned...on the weekends and a couple of evenings during the week I would go to the mall and sit at different makeup counters. Let the employees know that you are interested in makeup and are looking to learn. You'd be surprised at how much information you can get. Also, let as many people as possible do your makeup. Ask questions and act clueless. The more questions you ask the more information you get. Next, read every beauty magazine you can get your hands on. When clients start coming to you the will always want the look they found in magazine, awards show, or movie. You'll want to have a solid understanding the the color wheel, pigments, undertones...all that jazz. Read a skin care book or two. You should try to be as well versed in makeup and skin care as possible...they go hand in hand. When you start doing makeup for other people you'll need to have tough skin. What looks good to you will not look good to everyone else! You may think someone looks great in shades of purple but they may hate the color purple. Don't take it personally! Hope this helped a little. Once you get the swing of things it's a great experience! Supplies are tricky...you'll the most on foundations. You need to be able to do a great color match especially if you are going to be doing weddings and proms. Women want to look PERFECT for these things. Having a shade too dark or too light will be very bad, lol! Buy you shadows in pallets...it's cheaper and easier to transport. Brushes are VERY expensive but last a long time if you keep them clean. You'll need the basics first...concealer, foundation, liner, shahow shader, slanter shadow, lip, powder, and blush. Never put the same brush on more than one person before you clean it! I know this is alot of information. Once you get everything down, you'll be great! Email me if you need to!What steps do I need to take to be a make up artist part time?
Start off at a department store at the makeup counters. From there you'll learn how to do makeup on other people, not just yourself. You'll learn everything you need to and you'll get experience by working on customers, and you'll probably have people that come in for proms or weddings. Once you get comfortable with your skills and you get people who like your work, start handing out business cards and voila! Makeup artist!
be an undertaker first in a funeral parlor coz you won't find resistance in your practice. just practice and practice for practice makes perfect.

  • Need help finding a make up artist for my wedding?

Can you go to a department store in the mall and have them do it? We are getting married on a Sunday and all of the salons are closed.Need help finding a make up artist for my wedding?
Yes you can go to Clinque, Sephora, MAC or any other department store. Just try and make an appointment. Usually it's free, but be expected to buy something.Need help finding a make up artist for my wedding?
You can definitely go to a department store and have it done there. I'd check with the makeup-artists in advance, and if possible make an appointment. Some times they're extra helpful and nice to brides and give them a private room and/or help them outside regular store hours. I recomment going to Clinique or MAC.

You can also do a google/yellowpages search for independent freelance makeup artists in your area. There are many great makeup artists that work purely freelance and can work with your schedule.

How much does a MAC make-up artist make....I live in Alberta Canada?

I am going for my third interview for a counter position for a part time MAC cosmetics girl. I have 5 years of on counter experience, certified in make-up artistry, and at one point of my life was a former counter manager of another line. We haven't discussed wage yet, but does anyone have any ideas? I live in ALberta, Canada. Also any hints or tips to get the job with my interviews coming up???How much does a MAC make-up artist make....I live in Alberta Canada?
I don't know exactly how much you would make hourly, but I know a lot of it has to do with how much makeup you sell in a day.. You have to reach a certain goal for your sales. And if you don't make the goals that are needed to be met, then you'll usually get fired because everything is based on how much products you sell!!

How many hours does a freelance make up artist work a week?

It really depends on how much they want to work. Freelance means the artist is free to work with as many or as few people they want. I know a few artists that work for several salons. They will be very busy on the weekends for proms, weddings and other functions. There is also a need for artists at TV stations, such as for the news reporters. Because of their schedules, they need people as early as 5 am and as late as the 11 o'clock news. How many hours does a freelance make up artist work a week?
Each to his own desire, and how much he wants to earn that week. That is why it is called freelancing.

Thanks How much does a Mac make-up artist make working at Macy's?
I work at a Clinique counter in Macy's in Oregon and make about $9 per hour. I think all the makeup girls make the same. Sometimes you get tips (but very rarely!) from people who are especially happy with what you've done. Overall, it's a really fun job! :)How much does a Mac make-up artist make working at Macy's?
Usually at MAC they make between 10-20$.

Most of them range in the 15$ area.

How do i pursue my dream of becomming a make up artist?

i really want to become a hair and make up artist.. how can i persue my dreams? How do i pursue my dream of becomming a make up artist?
The first step you need to take is to look around for a beauty school also known as cosmetology school... some places in bigger cities will offer a special make-up course others it will be combined in with the cosmetology.

Here's a website that will show you some schools in your area.

    http://www.beautyschoolsdirectory.com/

Goodluck and enjoy... its a blast! How do i pursue my dream of becomming a make up artist?
just make it up as you go !
Well, you of course should get into a cosmetology (not sure of the spelling) school. A lot of the time, they do make up and hair for pagents and different shows or plays in local theaters. You never really know who you'll met at some of these places.
you should start working at a make up store or a hair dressers salon. If you started working at a make up store, try get the job where you put make up on people's faces!

How do I become a make up artist????? Makeup artist professional opinion is preferred.?

I would like to become a make up artist but don't know how to go about it. I can put on my own make up fairly decent, however I want to learn how to professionally apply make up. Shoul I go to a beauty school? What type of money is there to be made in this profession and whats the best way to get into it?How do I become a make up artist????? Makeup artist professional opinion is preferred.?
Hello! I am a makeup artist myself and I absolutely love it. I started out working for a makeup counter at a department store. That's a great place to start out. You don't need experience, just an ambition to learn and work. Any cosmetic line is good especially Clinique (which is where I started), Lancome or Chanel. They send you to schools to learn about skin physiology and all about makeup and application. While working at the department store you make your hourly plus commission which is nice. Once you build a client base they will ask you to come to their houses and do their makeup for weddings and special occasions. This is nice because you can set a rate to charge for your services. When I started out, I charged my wedding parties $75 for the bride and $50 per bridesmaid. Working for a cosmetic line is also great because they give you free product for yourself too :-) After you gain experience you can also work freelance. Freelance is great because you can work for different cosmetic lines doing events. Freelance work lets you make your own hours and pays at least $25/hour. I love being a makeup artist because I can still have my Monday thru Friday job and do this on nights and weekends. You meet great people and make great money. I say go for it!! It's a great opportunity. If you have any more specific questions, shoot me an email. I'd be happy to help you out! Good luck! How do I become a make up artist????? Makeup artist professional opinion is preferred.?
Do not go to a beauty school. Beauty schools are for people who would like a license in hair, nails, or skincare. They don't teach makeup. You need to go to a professional makeup artistry school. Makeup artists are certified, not licensed.

    Some reputable schools are:

    Complexions (Canada)

    Westmore Academy (California)

    MUD (New York and California)

    Vancouver Film School (Canada)

    Makeup Forever (Paris)

The schools will teach you what you need to do to get into makeup but going to makeup school is the first step. Many people try to avoid it and it's much harder for them to be taken seriously. The ones you hear about who get into makeup with no training are the ones who are rare and gifted with unusual artistic ability. You hear about them because they are so rare.

The pay really varies by what you want to do. Movie makeup artist make anywhere from $250-$1000 a day. That's union rates. To join the union you have to do a certain number of low budget films and pay union dues. You'll start at doing low budget films for anywhere from $20-$100 a day. For TV artists you can make anywhere from $1000-$5000 a week. TV is VERY hard to get into and you normally have to be represented by an agency. Agencies require very well put together professional portfolios to sign you. You can also just do local bridal makeup and make a living doing that. Typically for bridal makeup on a professional level you can make anywhere from $500-$1000 a day. There are no definitive amounts you can make in makeup artistry because the market varies by state and by the type of work you are doing. It also varies by how good you are and how much you work to get jobs. Jobs are high competition. You need to network with other artists (you'll get most of your first jobs from fellow artists you are friends with) and you need to check job boards like craigslist.com and your makeup school job board. You have to stay focused and really want it to be successful. Artists potentially make a lot of money but they also have long spans between jobs so you have to be able to budget accordingly. You may make $5000 in one day but you'll have to make that last until you find your next job and that could take a month or more. It's a fun job but it's hard work. You are on your feet all day and most days consist of 12-14 hour work days with only 2-3 hours of sleep in between. You work in all sorts of conditions and have to be pleasant and easy going the entire time. Movie shoots are the most grueling. TV is pretty cushy but hard to break into. Photo shoots are fun but exhausting and you have a lot of hot lights melting your makeup while the photographer is barking orders at you. Runway work is fun but very rushed and very stressful. The backstage stress could be cut with a knife. You have to really love the industry to succeed.
yes you have to go to cosmotology school.. aveda and paul mitchell have great schools..pricey at that... moneys good if you are
some makeup stores are willing to train their employees for free. Search around an ask if experience is required
The first thing that you have to do...is go to cosmetology school...My cousin is a beautician / makeup artist. that is what she did, and then got her foot in the door at a local salon...and on terms of money, she is my age (23) and drives a BMW z4 (2006), and has a house of her own....so the money is there.
I have two answers for you. I used to work on a TV show where they had make-up artists. Intern with one if you can! Great way to get a foot in the door. Also, there are make-up classes offered in many theater schools across the country. You can learn more than just cosmetic make-up, but how to do special effect make-up, cuts, brouses, and scars as well as old-age make-up. Theaters always need make-up artists (great volunteer oppurtunity and way to take pictures and build a portfolio)!

How much is it on average? How long does it take to become a licensed Make up artist? ?
i wanted to do that for a while, i havent found any cheap schools, the online courses that ive seen are either you pay by sessions, or enroll in a professional school, which (from what i saw) ranged from $5,000 - $20,000. (crazy expensive)

however i have seen some offered at local community colleges... i have no idea if those are good though.

First, you need to have a steady hand and you should be able to get along with all types of people.

It's a good idea to pick up a job at a clothing store or a fashion boutique cause it gives you ideas on how to combine your colors and see how different type of people do their makeup.

I guess it's something you have to be observant for.

Can a client sue a make-up artist for getting an allergic reaction to the makeup?

If a freelance make-up artist w/no license did someones makeup... and that client had a bad reaction... could they sue them?

Also, Could the makeup artist have the client sign papers before they do their make up to avoid this?

Because most of all makeup artists that are freelance don't have licenses. Can a client sue a make-up artist for getting an allergic reaction to the makeup?
You can sue anyone for anything or even nothing. However, to win, you would have to show the makeup artist was negligent. You would also have to show you had actual damages.

A make-up artist can have clients sign a release. If it were properly worded (have a lawyer do it - it's worth the money), it would hold up in court under most circumstances. Can a client sue a make-up artist for getting an allergic reaction to the makeup?
freelance make-up artist are not supposed to ever touch your face they are only supposed to bring you throw the steps. If you apply the make up yourself than you did it and no you could not sue.You MUST have a state license to legally apply make up to someone.Only in matters of maybe being a prides maid or playing with it like teenage girls do would make it ok.But anyone who calls themselves a freelance make-up artist must have a license to do this and inmost states some kind of insurance.
I'm no lawyer, so keep that in mind, but I think that the person suing would have to show that the make-up artist not only was negligent but also had malicious intent, something that would be very hard to prove. The laws also might vary state to state. What state did this occur in?

I just think about all those Avon and MaryKay reps out there who go around doing make-overs. There's no contract, as no one was forced to put on the make-up.
The answer would depend on what state you live in. I suppose, depending on the severity of the reaction, they could be sued for gross negligence.
Only if you knew or could have reasonably known that she'd be allergic.

Yes you can come up with papers.
Only if the artist was negligent.

That would mean that (s)he failed to take reasonable care.,

    Richard
Only if there was a good reason to suspect that you would have an allergic reaction.

Where can I get work experience as a make up artist in London Theatres?

I really want to go into it but I have to wait another year to go to college (didn't apply quick enough) 卢_卢 But in the mean time I really wanna do some work experience, anyone know which theatres in London takes people on?Where can I get work experience as a make up artist in London Theatres?
ask at the theatres if they would take you on. Tell them you are about to start a course and that you need wrk experience to see if you are going to like it. It is important you have it. You have to be a lil persuasive because they have to take time out for you and it's a big deal so you need to show you're passionate enough.

ps cant you still apply. ask at the college that you dont want to waste another yr and want to do this course soooo much coz it means alot to you. show enthusiasm and i bet they wont be able to refuse. Ask to meet the tutor. Say you want to talk to him/her about it and what it involves for you to understand what is required of you. Only that it gives you a chance to skip past people not directly involved with the course and ask her/him if you can still join. I'm sure they're wont be much catching up to do.

What steps do i need to take to become a make up artist to the stars??

Move to LA. Go to beauty school (for hair AND makeup and etc) and then go to a specialized makeup school. You have to go in this order because you need your cosmetology license to get into a special school for just makeup.

Newbury College in LA is good and pretty well-regarded. There are a lot of other ones here also. Once you get to know a couple, there will probably be a ton more that you start to hear about.

Then, make a myspace or whatever and start doing makeup for people's weddings and stuff. The thing about LA is that there are always people shooting random stuff (music videos, film projects, low-budget commercials) and they need people who aren't high profile to do makeup. So it will be easy enough to find work, and then you just keep doing that and keeping yourself publicized. What steps do i need to take to become a make up artist to the stars??
work work work! find a GOOD beauty school in your area and bust your butt. once you graduate, stay in the business to keep your practice. Get your name out there as much as you can. Once you've been in the business for awhile and you've seen MANY different cases, then I'd start looking for positions in either New York or LA. And start over again, work, work,WORK. Getting anywhere in the esthetics industry takes ton of work, just be prepared for that.
you need to step by step workyour way to just practicing on people you know, and just a little bit ach day you'll get better
You have to know how to match foundations, powders, concealer etc. to people's skin tones. You have to be able to convey a character's personality through makeup. You have to know how to make any makeup look work. You would probably need to know which brands work best for whose skin tone/type and you have to know how to make a face look best on camera.
Get the names of makeup artists and immulate them (after you have your license of course). Send them correspondence, read their articles and information, move to calif or NY and schmooze. Ya, I sound silly, but the only way to get that good is to study the best. Good luck.
You just need a good background lots of hard work. You have to have experience before you get there. You cant suddenly be a celebs make-up artist first you can be someone elses then you work your way there.

If i want to be an aspiring make-up artist, where do i start career wise?

im a highschool student, so where do i start? If i want to be an aspiring make-up artist, where do i start career wise?
If your high school does concurrent enrollment with a tech school, get some cosmetology classes down so you understand facial structure and how to apply basic make-up correctly. Then get into the theater classes where you can learn how to do theatrical make-up.

In September (or earlier some places) find a haunted house to work for doing the scary and grotesque stuff. You can learn a lot from the more experienced artists there.

    That will get you started.

I would practice all you can on makeup and haircutting/styling then go off to cosmetology school after high school. If you are good enough, you could probably get a job at a salon interning, or at least being able to watch. I really doubt you would get hired to do hair or anything without the appropriate experience..

Generally, what you take in high school other than the cores isn't a huge deal. Since you won't get a job solely based on the fact that you took a Cosmetology class in high school. You just need to go to an accredited school and get your education there (so college)

    Otherwise, take cosmo class.

You can contact local salons and beauty schools and see if they have anyone that would be willing to do it. If you wanted to be able to buy the products used on you, you could contact a local Mary Kay, Avon, or Mark representative and ask if they'd be able to host a party for you.

Yup, you got it. Cosmetologist does it all-Whats the difference between a cosmotologist and a make up artist?
cosmetologists need to pass exams and get licensed to perform

    makeup artists don't need anything
    Cosmotologist do everything hair,nails,makeup.
A COSMOTOLOGIST IS A HAIRDRESSER AND A MAKE UP ARTIST IS A PERSON THAT PUTS ON FACIAL MAKE UPS!!!
Just to respond to ';phataway.com'; who posted...real makeup artist DO need a license. There are many people who claim they are makeup artists because they are talented...but a real makeup artist went to school for it and has a license in it. :)
cosometologist does hair makeup and nails yes. and makeup artist only does makeup and you do need different certificates. any specific reason? i can give you more details if you are interested in those areas.

I don't know much about makeup and consider myself challenged in all areas of personal primping (that's why professionals are required) .... but ....

Don't all of the makeup companies that offer sales in your home (Mary K, Avon, etc) offer training for their new recruits?

It's not exactly what you're looking for maybe but it would be an opportunity to help women discover their best look and make some money at the same time. You could even pay for school with what you make as a representative for one of these companies.

I've known Mary K rep's who worked in community theater as makeup artists (volunteer only).

I do NOT recommend charging anyone for your services as a makeup artist without proper licensing. You need education in all kinds of areas, including; diseases of the skin, eyes, etc, hygiene, proper care of products, %26amp; so much more. You also need a business license.

If you try to advertise and work without a license, licensed makeup artists will turn you in to the Makeup Artist Police. You could be in hot water, lose any chance of ever becomming licensed, and possibly in trouble with Uncle Sam for tax issues.

Cosmetology school can be expensive but scholarships are always available.

If this is your passion, isn't it worth doing it right?I need tips on where I can start becoming a make-up artist however I can not afford to go to school. Any Tips?
It completely depends on your state if you need a license. You may want to check into that first. If you wanted to so it full time, I would recommend you starting by assisting more established artists but if you only want to do it on the side ... then that seems like a waste of everyones time. I don't even know what you mean by on the side ... this is a very hard business to get into and people work for years building up their skills and contacts just to get regular work ... you won't get a print ad or filmwork by doing it on the side. It's a all or nothing, dog eat dog world.
well u cant be a makeup artist without having your licence, school is not expensive at all. i just graguated from school and now work at M.A.C .. which i love and i know u can not do anyones makeup with out a licence..
If you can't afford to go to school, it always helps to look in fashion magazines to help you out. Look at the different ways to apply makeup and the different makeup you can use. Practice these skills on a doll or on your friends. :)

    Hope this helps!

How do get that job ? What do you get paid ? What are your advice for getting and KEEPING the job ? What are some of the pros and cons ?

While I am asking about MAC specifically, I am open to any responses from anyone who works at any other beauty counters ( Lancome, Clinique, etc.)

A Grateful thanks to anyone who responds !What is it like to be a make up artist for MAC?
Someone just answered this question, try looking up MAC in search for questions, look through what people have said.

I used to work the Clarins/Chanel counter - it used to be a very selective process and was like the one intimidating job that you couldn't just get in the mall - I don't know how it is anymore? The difference with the counters is that you don't have to be a makeup artist to work there but someone said that at MAC, it's even harder and you have to be able to create a look for them for the interview kinda thing. I'd start practicing and preparing. What is it like to be a make up artist for MAC?
go to a M.A.C. counter and ask one.

  • What type of college would one study at to become a movie make-up artist?

What type of college would someone go to to study to be a professional make-up artist?

And I don't mean just making people look pretty...I mean making people look entirely different. Special effects make-up and such for movies or the stage.

    Please be specific

And also, if you know of any appropriate colleges in florida, you should list them :)

Thank you! What type of college would one study at to become a movie make-up artist?
if you want to get into that, you have to move to LA, vancouver or toronto. thats where the movie industry is, and thats where all the schools are. Ive been looking into the same thing, except im more into special effects.

i found this answer in a very similar question and found it extremely insightful:

Myself: 10 years makeup artistry experience, 800 hours makeup training, 450 hours esthetic training. What type of college would one study at to become a movie make-up artist?
There arent specific schools for makeup artistry. You would have to go into a different field that incorporates makeup into it. Theres one like esthetics which is skin care. Usually when you go into that, they will offer you other courses that are for makeup specifically. You just have to search. I live in michigan so im not aware of florida school sorry.

Start up at a theatre first, at least to build your portfolio. Then pass it on throughout the film industry. I live in Austin, it's a budding independent film industry out here...I may not pull in the BIG bucks right away but as I build up experience and reputation, it will have a good pay off in the end. Trying to bust into Hollywood or NYC is damn near impossible unless you are the best of the best and you've got some insiders to help you out. Good Luck! How much money can i expect to gain doing make up artist?
Working in Hollywood doing makeup for the celebs or Doing special Effects makeup for Horror movies. Megabucks.
you want to get paid good money doing that i'd look at show.biz. hollywood or broadway. anywhere with a strong union for the industry. you need to put in long days with overtime to get big checks. working in a salon isn't going to pay the bills unless you're the one that owns the place.
If You were to be hired as a make-up artist for a celebrity, say er NIcole Ritchie, you could make miollions, but if you were to be hired by me, you might be able to make $.7.50 hourly
depends on who your working for. As far as I know, you can get a pretty good salary.

Do you recommend beauty school or taking classes at actual salons? I dont wanna work at a cheap little salon. Well dear the first is to hold on too that dream no matter what adversity comes your way !! (and it will) second school chemistry class will help allot as for which school a beauty school is the best choice because a salon might not allow you to apprentice without a license next Practice! on every one and every thing even your neighbors poodle! and like the other fellow stated make a portfolio take lots of pictures!!! and even your mistakes because we all make them and we all learn from them remember some mistakes can become that next big trend do not fear them and please keep in mind that you are in a really over loaded field keep at it!!What are the steps to becoming an excellent hair/make-up artist?

I want to become a freelance make-up artist? How do I start?

I am a newly licensed esthetician. I really enjoy make-up artistry %26amp; I want to take my career in that direction. How do I start up a portfolio? What (how much) will I need to buy for supplies (ie: tools %26amp; make-up)? Do I need to hire a professional photographer? Thanks in advance for your advice!I want to become a freelance make-up artist? How do I start?
I love doing movie make-up and I have found that the best way to get established is to get a bunch of your friends together or people you know and just do different techniques to show off, some for halloween, some to show age, and all that jazz. And when you do your friends' make-up, take lots of photos and keep them in a portfolio. Get some business cards and start distributing them. get your name out there and go to community theatres and see if they need any help with make-up and offer to do a showcase of your work for free, just to let them know what you can do.

Another great way is on halloween, pack up your gear and materials and go to public places where people can see you work. Do a few make-up jobs for free. For instance, in South Carolina we have this event called the Zombie Walk every halloween. And this make-up artist always shows to do some AMAZING zombie make-up for tips and everything. If you can find something like that, offer to do some make-up and all that, just get your name out there, don't be afraid to step out into the world and show your stuff.

And if the halloween like make-up isn't your style, then go to little fashion shows or make-up counters at sears and all and showcase your stuff there.

Just get out there and get established.

(also, if you need an AMAZING tip and recipe to create rotting flesh, send me an email, I'll send it to you and it looks AMAZINGLY realistic, I used it when I did make-up for a zombie role in a movie I helped film)I want to become a freelance make-up artist? How do I start?
For the startup costs, putting together your own ';kit'; of tools and products is going to cost you anywhere from $250 to $500, depending on how much you want to get, and how good you want your products to be. I would advise that you splurge on your brushes, because as long as you take care of them, they can last you a very long time.

To start up your portfolio, enlist your friends. Do their makeup, and use them for feedback and to get some practice in. Just make sure you document how you achieve those looks in both written descriptions and photographs.

As far as the photographer goes, you can either hire one, trade services with one, or find a college student. Many students who are photography majors will be grateful for the experience, and you may be able to pay them a bit less than a regular/professional photographer.

  • Do you need make up artist school or natural talent?

I want to become a freelance makeup artist but I'm not sure if I want to invest so much money in to school and I have no natural talent for makeup. I love make up and love to experiment on my own face but I wouldn't say I have the best hand at it. But that may come with practice. Anyone in the make up industry please help. Thank you in advance.Do you need make up artist school or natural talent?
It's a combination of both. Although the industry isn't regulated, going to an artist school and getting a certificate will give you credibility. It is a worthwhile investment because it will give you automatic rapport with future clients.

This is an issue with piercers (and a lot of other industries). In some countries body piercers don't have to attend school, they can just open piercing shops and start punching holes in people. But if you attend a school and have that piece of paper on your wall that says you're educated, people will trust you.

School would be a worthwhile investment if you want to pursue this for your future. Through your education, you will learn to build a proper portfolio and then you'll be well on your way to building a successful business.

Makeup is sort of a natural thing, it does require a sense of colors, shading, tones and a steady hand. But a lot of these concepts can be taught in school - you just need to creativity to create your own looks.

    Good luck.

What is the biggest problem make-up artist face?

What problems do makeup artist come across in their profession and how do you believe it can be fixed? What is the biggest problem make-up artist face?
Applying too much makeup. I see some people when they've been professionally made up, and they look like someone applied a gallon of foundation, making it look like they painted their face with spackling compound. Less is more when it comes to make up. A clear moisturizing foundation that dries to a matt finish, easy with the blush or bronzing brush, don't slather on the eye shadow with bold colors, stay towards neautral powdery tones, stay away from products with a greasy shine. Not a ton of eye liner or mascara, is needed to bring out the eyes. Remember, you don't want to look like a racoon. Make sure everything is well blended, so it doesn't look like it's in layers on the skin, but one continuous palet. You have to think of your face as a watercolor, not an oil painting. Create enhancement, not a mask. Bring out your best features, but not to the point that they look cartoonish. Remember , a good make up job, can make your face look good, but it can't make a bad colored , badly cut hairdo look good, or an unflattering outfit. All three have to work to even notice the nice makeup job.

I am fourteen and I want to start pursuing my dream now! I know that I can take cosmetology classes at my highschool, but is there anything else that I can do?What could I do to become a make-up artist?
well once you are 18 you can start doing makeovers at sephora. that would be good for you because then you can learn how to work with different clients and makeup. but for now just keep messing around with your makeup and trying new things :)What could I do to become a make-up artist?
Yeah, take cosmetology classes, and start working at MAC, benefit cosmetics, or somewhere in the macys cosmetics departments. Good luck cosmetology is so much fun!!
Take art classes as well. You'll learn to work with different mediums, different effects, etc. Start selling make-up asap. Avon, Mary Kay, counters at departments stores, where ever.
Try and get a job with Sephora or MAC! you could get some excellent experience at either place. Being MAC trained is a big deal.
Hi! I'm 14 too and I'm working for my future as well! It's cool to see people my age actually caring about their future! ANyway here is an idea:

I'd start small, about $50, seeing as you don't have a professional make-up degree people might not want to pay the full 70-100 for make-up by you. If you're aged 16-19 you can take this as a part time course for free although you will have to pay for the make-up kit and lash/brow tinting and facial kit which will cost around 拢130. There are beauty consultant in every mall around town. In Dillard's, Macy's, and other department stores at the cosmetic counter.

I'm sure there are plenty of independent make-up artist too, more expensive.

My beauty consultant is located at the Channel counter at Dillard's in First Colony Mall. She works evening hours and weekends.

I know it's a little outside the city, but she is the best.

She will help you find that natural looking combination that works in you everyday lifestyle.Where can I get a good makeover from a professional make up artist in Houston, TX?
    Find a Mary Kay rep

If you have a Merle Norman store in your area that is a good place to start as well.

Both are very good at helping you pick your colors.

A store like Dillard's, Macy's, Parisian's all have make up counters with professional make up artists that can do free make overs and teach you as well.
I have found that if you go to the galleria or willowbrook mall or the woodlands mall or mamorial city they have Clinique stands in Dillards and Macys that are really good at makeovers!

How does someone go about becoming a make-up artist?

I have read that there is no degrees required to be a make up artist is that true? Is all I need to get into the business a portfolio to show off my work? Is it a well paying career and are there enough job openings? How does someone go about becoming a make-up artist?
Well, here is the long and short of it. There is no general rule that says you need to have a degree to work in the makeup industry and often times having a strong portfolio is the most important factor in getting hired for a job. However, many states require that anyone who applies makeup as a business have some sort of license. That means going to beauty school. In New York City, where I live, I had to get a degree in either Cosmetology (hairdressing) or Esthetics (skincare) to be state licensed and work. That sucks as most of these programs will spend no more than 30hrs out of 600 learning hours on makeup. Unfortunately it is what you have to do in order to practice legally in most states. I personally got my degree in esthetics as I felt if would be more helpful than getting a degree in Cosmetology as I had no plans to cut hair EVER and it is a much longer course required for state license in hair. I did find the experience in skincare to be very useful as a makeup artist and it certainly has given me an edge in the industry. I also went to a professional cosmetic program that was a 1200 hour course that involved a whole unit on portfolio development and business as well. That gave me a ';degree';, but that didn't apply towards my state license. I wish states would realize that makeup artistry deserves it's own licensing board.

If you plan to have your own makeup business I would check with your state to see what licenses they require. If you plan to just do makeup on your own for individuals (like weddings or sweet 16's, etc.) then you can decide if you think getting licensed is worth it, but you do so at your own risk. If you plan to work in a salon or spa or for some editorial work then you will most likely need to be licensed.

To find beauty schools in your area do a search online and request a tour and some information on exactly what the program covers. You want to make sure what licenses (if any) you will be elidgable for upon completion of your learning hours. How does someone go about becoming a make-up artist?
going to beauty school for it, if you want. My sister went and she took make up courses, of you can apply for mac cosmetics or any macys makeup counters and if your hired they will send you to some courses. Yes you can make good money with it. And about job openings im sure there is always someone hiring.
you go to beauty school to be an Esthetician. I go to school for managing cosmetology so I will be licensed for hair, nails and skin, but my school also offers classes for girls/guys just interested in nails and another class for girls/guys just interested in skin.
    a lot of practice

do your friends makeup and take pictures of them afterwards

Good tips and advice in building a make-up artist portfolio? How do you present your work to an angency? Help!

I'm ready to build up my portfolio but I need some advice.

What are the best type of pics for it? How do I present my work to an agency? How's the interviewing process?

Anykind of help and information will be appreciated. Thanks!Good tips and advice in building a make-up artist portfolio? How do you present your work to an angency? Help!
I'm not exactly sure about this... but I was in mary kay for awhile and made a booklet of before and after photos after I did different girl's make overs and I actually got a lot of business from it. So while you're buiding your portfolio, find people and do before and after's of them.... get a variety of different ';looks'; to show.Good tips and advice in building a make-up artist portfolio? Just an FYI so you don't sound like you don't know what your talking about on Model Maayhem if you get on.. TFP/TFCD is TRADE FOR Print or TRADE FOR CD... NOT time for.. :) Report Abuse

A great way to get started on a portfolio is to do TFP shoots(time for print). You will need to have a variety of work to show off your talent. Natural look, glamour makeup, High fashion (crazy stuff). Join Model Mayhem (modelmayhem.com). It is free! It is a forum that you can learn so much from other artists, and meet up with models and photographers in your area that want to collaborate and make awesome pics for their books too! (I am #505920, say hi once you are on!)

I would recommend getting a full portfolio of knockout pics before attempting to set up an appointment with an agency. A lot of makeup artists think an agency is the way to go, they don't realize that an agency will take a certain percentage (sometimes 20-40%) of the money from the job for landing that client for you. If you want your portfolio to look professional, don't do before and after (unless you wanna book weddings and proms forever), it shows you are not as experienced. Call agencies in your area and ask what size photos they prefer (some want 8x10, others 9x12 or 11x14), and I do have a couple of black and white images, It can really show off your contouring skills :)
I used to do movie makeup (like the blood and gore stuff), but I also do professional beauty makeup sometimes. To build your portfoilo I would suggest many kinds of photos. You would definately want black and whites, sepia, but mostly color shots. Add in some of your creative work too. I would put an add in the newspaper for some volunteer models. Request them to have no makeup on and no blemishes. Also ask them to have their eyebrows done the day before the photoshoot. All the models need to have a before headshot. You also need your models to sign a release form stating that you own the rights to their photos. You will want closeup shots of eyes, lips, cheeks, and before and afters. Another thing to consider is looking at makeup ads in magazines for inspiration. Make sure your photos are in focus. Your portfolio will need actual photos (not copies printed on paper). Also, many industries now require all your photos backed up on a high resolution disk (so they can send them to others in their department). During an interview you will be asked the obvious questions, like how long you have been doing this, but they will test your product knowlede. What founation color would go on someone with combination olive skin? When you find an agency, you need to call them for an appointment to see them. Do not just mail in your work. Well, good luck!
well no black and white pictures. do peoples make up and then take it to any agency. DO NOT MAIL IT. take it straight to them. the interviewing is nothing big but you need to know things about make up.
